Newspapers and magazines

The news business provides an ideal training ground for an editor. You learn on the job, and when you see your mistakes in print with no do-overs, you learn fast! In various roles at the Chicago Tribune, The Washington Post, and the Miami Herald, I edited just about everything from breaking news to long magazine pieces. In the past few years I’ve moved into freelancing and done contract editing for Crain’s Chicago Business, and was the copy editor for The Rotarian (now called Rotary magazine), the award-winning monthly flagship magazine of Rotary International.
